An E-pal is an Internet Pen Pal. Living with Sjögren's Syndrome can be very difficult, very lonely. Only those who have Sjögren's can truly understand how we feel. It’s important to have someone to "talk" to when no one else understands. An Sjogren's World E-Pal can be that special friend for you.

Name: Kristin
Gender: female
Age: 49
Lives in: Idaho, USA
Years with Sjogren's: 1+

About Me: I am a single mom (was married to a doc for 20 years), already diagnosed with MS, Fibro, Ehlers-Danlos, severe Sleep Apnea, heart problems, as well as pulmonary ones, and a host of other joint complaints. I am an avid reader, I write a blog on myspace, and love movies and brain play, but need a "pal" to help me through this latest disease that was added to my collection. I'm scared - I have two kids who rely on me to be my best, and with vision problems, vertigo, pain and fatigue, that's hard - help? I've lived with the symptoms for some time, but was only recently confirmed. I am a need-to-know person who believes in science, not homeopathic medicine (contrary to my ex's wife). For my personality, think Gilmore Girls.

Gender: female
Age: 26

Years with Sjogren's: 3

About Me:  I am a 26 year old woman who is fighting Sjogren's Syndrome, CREST syndrome, Celiac disease, Reflux disease, and Reynaud's phenomena. I was diagnosed a year ago but have been suffering for about 10 years. I am very tired, very frustrated, and confused as to what I have to do in order to have a good life. I am a graphic designer, illustrator and dog lover. I try to make the most out of what I have. I have a serious boyfriend who loves me but we are both struggling with my health and the idea of me being able to have and care for a baby. I have seen so many doctors I cannot even recall how many anymore. The majority of them did not believe me and said that I had a mental problem even though test results were positive. Some days I just want to scream and others just sleep. I am at a loss as to what I should do. People in my life do not understand. They think I look good, therefore, I am good. I am so sick of feeling isolated and alone in dealing with my health. I would love to chat with someone who is just as frustrated as I am. Look forward to hearing from you.

About Me:  I've always thought of myself as strong, but I'm looking to others who have SS to help me find ways to cope with my ability to do less. I was a runner and athletic person before this, and now I struggle to keep the extra pounds off. I would like to have kids, but I worry about my ability to take care of them. I may also have SLE. I welcome feedback...especially positive, uplifting, but even the tougher things. I like to make jewelry, listen to music, and play with my dog. Looking forward to having an e-pal!

Name: Kerry
Gender: female
Age: 30
Lives in: Canada
Years with Sjogren's: 0, boyfriend has it

About Me:  Hi there,
I am a little different as I do not have Sjogrens, but my boyfriend does. I need to understand his disease a little better, as I think it would enable me to help him more. We often have conflict over the fact that he is unable to do a lot of things. I really love him, but have a hard time understanding what this disease is really like. I would love to talk to other people about what it is like, in particular the fatigue, because this seems to be the biggest problem for him. I also would love to talk to other people who have loved ones with Sjogrens. I find it is difficult for me or him to find people to talk to. He was diagnosed at 15 years old, which I understand is extremely rare....anyone else? He is 27 now.
Kerry - looking to understand better.

About Me:  Hi! I was diagnosed with SS in 1997 and have since added autoimmune hepatitis, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, lichen planus and degenerative back disease to my illness list. I have good days and bad days and continue to search for therapies (meds, exercise, etc.) to help me have more of the good days. I have found faith, good friends, family and especially good doctors are critical to my success and I would love to hear from others coping with the ever changing symptoms of autoimmune disease. I am 50 and widowed. My daughter and 7 year old grandson live with me. I also left a 25 year human resources career last year because of my illnesses and I'm trying to learn to cope with all of these changes. Would love to hear from others who are "coping" too!

Name: Joan
Gender: female
Age: 52
Lives in: Alabama, USA
Years with Sjogren's: 13

About Me:  Greetings from Mobile, AL! I have mild problems with dry mouth/dry eyes but have experienced extremely painful flares of parotid gland swelling which pressed on nerves in my face - this went on for almost 12 years off and on. When this happened, I just had to wait it out on pain pills. I was dx with Sjogren's from a lip biopsy back in my late 30's.
About a year ago, I found a wonderful new rheumatologist (Tom McGee) that knew alot about SS and he said I needed to be on Plaquenil and Neurontin, not loritab for pain and steroid shots. After getting a checkup, I got on both and life has been SO SO much better. Swelling in my face is all but a distant memory. I hope I can help someone else by listing myself on this website. I can listen and be a friend and offer encouragement and hope.
Hobbies: love to read, walk, member of Master Gardeners, play w/ our Westie named Buddy (he's 6). Have been married 33 years to the same great guy (Kenny). We are both very active in our church (Christ United Methodist). God bless! Joan

E-Pal number 2006-103

Name: Loraine
Gender: female
Age: 52
Lives in: UK
Years with Sjogren's: 5/6

About Me: I am married with no kids but lots of pets. I work in my husbands business so can choose when to work luckily, I would find it impossible to hold down a job. I would be particularly interested in hearing from other ss sufferers who have also had breast cancer, which I had in 1999. I was diagnosed with ss almost by accident in 2005 after numerous tests for persistent abdominal pain (mostly looking for cancer). I have dry eyes and mouth, frequent mouth sores, RA, gastric/bowel problems, chronic heartburn, fatigue, on and off depression. A real barrel of laughs. I feel like screaming sometimes when people say but you look so well! If you don't have ss you can't understand the frustration of feeling grotty most of the time and not being able to make plans just in case its a bad day. I would like contact with others who do know what I am living with for mutual support.

Years with Sjogren's: 5+

About Me: Currently two years into a 3-4 year posting in NSW before returning to Cambridge, UK sometime during 2007. Would love to hear from anyone in a bid to keep mutually cheerful! I have a small network of well meaning friends in Australia but no one really understands like a fellow sufferer so I am happy to offer support and compare notes. Diagnosed with various forms of Lupus since 1988 and SS since 2001 so it has been a bit of a long struggle (as it would appear to be for most of us). My husband and I have two young adult children at home in UK - one at Uni, the other just venturing into London for his first real job having graduated this summer.
Don't have a great deal of energy for activities since giving up work in 2003 but I try to keep young at heart and love fashion, music (the stuff our kids like!), design, photography and have even attempted a bit of contemporary artwork.

Lives in: Greece
Years with Sjogren's: Feb 2006

About Me: I'm a Dutch girl living in Greece. Since Feb this year I have all sorts of problems with my health and my rheumatologist thinks it's ss. Going through many websites, I'm convinced he's right and I also think I've had it for a number of years already without realizing. I'm still puzzled about the whole thing. why, how, what now?!? I take 200mg plaquenil per day at the moment. I'm though not too keen on medication. I hope there are others out there that can help me find alternative ways to improve. I stumbled onto 'body-mirroring' and the meditation helps me a lot. I'm a positive person and like to email with other positive ss-patients. My slogan "life goes on" (okay, I now, it doesn't always feel that way!!!!)

Really hate the dry mouth and would like to talk with each and everyone of the sufferers. I nearly died in December my platelets dropped down to 2000 being we need 150,000 I was lucky I got in when I did. I had a rash and my rheumatologist made me get a blood test. About Me: Hi! I am a Mom of twin boys and an RN. Just diagnosed with Sjogren's.
Did not even know I was ill at the time. Had a routine Chest X-ray and found multiple pulmonary nodules. Had an open lung biopsy done before Christmas, they thought it was lung cancer. Thank God it was not! It is Sjogren's...primary. I have the dry eyes and mouth and a positive lip biopsy. Now looking back I really have not felt like myself for the past 2 years but I am good at not giving in and noticing things. I have been on Prednisone for the past 3 months...hate the side effects.
May be going to Imuran or Rotuxin. Not sure yet. Anyone out there with similar pulmonary problems?

About Me: Hi, I've been told I've got SS, yet have no blood markers, pain or fatigue (apart from lack of sleep!). However I do have deteriorating dry eyes, nose and mouth. I am a lawyer with two school age children, and looking to correspond with someone who also has just mainly dryness as a problem and whose focus is keeping a busy career and family life as normal as possible.

About Me: I was diagnosed with Sjogren's about 3 years ago, although this disease is still a mystery to me. There are plenty of days I feel fine, and then days I feel so bad. It's depressing not knowing what the future holds. I'd love to correspond with others who deal with this disease. I'm married with two teenage children and work full time. I also take online classes - working on a degree. I'm looking forward to hearing from others.

About Me: I am looking for someone to talk through this disease. I have extreme fatigue. the dryness is not so bad - yet. My muscle and joint pain inhibits me from daily activities. This can be very difficult with a family and spouse. I am trying to cope with working (part-time) and daily household activities. People see me as a healthy individual but they don't know the half of it - this is very discouraging at times. I would like to talk to someone who shares my same experiences.

About Me: I was diagnosed with Sjogrens in January, yet have experienced symptoms for a few years and I had no idea what they were. So far things aren't too bad, just real dry eyes and mouth. Now that I am diagnosed I have a great doctor to help me and there is no more damage at this point. But the whole road ahead is intimidating and the prognosis for the rest of my life. There is a support group where I live, yet due to my schedule and some health issues I haven't been able to attend. It would be nice to have a contact.

About Me: Hi! I was diagnosed with SS right after the birth of my 14 year old son. I worked full time for a medical corporation until about a year and a half ago when my doctor put me on disability. I am tired all the time and sick a lot. I have been on methotrexate and prednisone but have decided against those for right now (too many side effects). I have never met anyone with SS and would really like to talk to someone. It's so hard for my family to understand. I feel like I am falling apart.

About Me: I am a 37 year old female. I was diagnosed with ss approximately 8 years ago. I have a very supportive husband and 3 wonderful boys. I find that they are many days I am unable to hold down my full time job and keep up with 3 boys. Due to my medical condition my physician wants me to cut my work hours back, possibly stop working. I am very depressed, but know that I need to try to keep my condition stable by following the doctors advice. Have high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, arthritis, chronic fatigue and more problems all due to the Sjogren's. I was just wandering if anyone else was going through this and would like to share information with me. Would like to be able to view others opinions and share my strengths also. Remember though to stay positive and do not give up even though your bad days may out number the good days!

About Me: I have had the symptoms of Sjogrens for a number of years but have just been recently diagnosed. My dentist was the one to suggest that I have the blood tests. They came out very positive, so much so that the Rheumatologist didn't even have any question to what it was. I am presently working full time. My family doesn't really understand what it is. They still think it is partially in my head and that if I try hard enough to ignore the symptoms that it will just go away. I am looking for someone to correspond with that understands some of the things that are going on.
